Prominent attorney Richard Caldwell is part owner of the Gentlemen's Club, where wealthy members can live out their romantic fantasies, but Richard gave up on love when he lost his longtime partner to cancer. Then on one of his rare visits to the club, a seductive new employee catches his eye and makes him an offer he can't refuse. How long do you mourn and grieve a lost love? How many chances at love do you get? How hard is it to change your life and move on from the old neighborhood and the wrong kind of friends? And when it all goes wrong, how do you get past it? All of these questions are explored by the author in this touching story.
Richard Caldwell is co-owner of The Gentlemen's Club. He's been alone since he lost the love of his life Tony to cancer. Oh, he's had the occasional hook-up. But like a lot of people who lose someone, he's having a hard time moving on. He's torn between guilt and grief and not believing that he'll ever find what he had with Tony.
Julian Decker has had a rough life and has rougher friends. But he's got a new job and is moving up in life. He now works for The Gentlemen's Club. Where he's been lusting, longing and wanting Richard from the first moment he saw him. But on a lonely night, he makes a trip back to an old haunt and hooks up with old friends. It's a mistake; he knows it after it happens. He needs to leave the old life behind.
Taking a chance that could lose him his job, the next time Julian sees Richard at the club, he leaves his post to talk to him. Richard is startled by the resemblance Julian has to Tony, and he doesn't know what to do with the mixed emotions that he feels about Julian. Julian just wants a chance with Richard, but he's unaware of the resemblance factor.
When Julian's past shows up and hurts Richard, he's willing to do whatever it takes, including taking the blame to make sure Richard is okay. But by taking the blame, he knows any chance with the man he now loves is over.
I found layers of depth to both Richard and Julian that made their story richer. The author wrote Richard as older and more experienced, yet with a bit more vulnerability than Julian. Julian is younger, stronger, rougher around the edges, but is also gentle with Richard while being insecure about measuring up to Richard's wealth and lifestyle. This reversal of the standard older man/younger man dynamic made this story all the better.
The author has written this story so that you are carried along with the men as their relationship develops. I enjoyed getting to know more about Richard, whom you meet in the first book of this series. And now I'm wondering, who is the next to fall in love at The Gentlemen's Club.
