As I understand it, the only new novella in this book is Angels' Dance, as the other three novellas have previously been printed in other anthologies. As for me, I've only read Angels' Judgement before in another anthology and it's been some time ago, so reading this book for me is like opening a new book and experiencing the adventures for the first time.
Angels' Pawn is a short novella about Janvier and Ashwini, when they worked together on a case, and definitely before Archangel's Shadows. You can feel the chemistry sizzling between them, but what struck me the most is Janvier's feelings (or starting to feel) for Ash. It's there in the way he's protective of her, and in how he made clear that he wants her, even if she didn't reciprocate in words. It would probably be good to read this before reading their full length story in Archangel's Shadows, which I can't wait to read!
Angels' Judgement is the story of Sara and Deacon, where Sara (Elena's best friend) is nominated to be the next Guild Director. This story happens before Angels' Blood, because in said book, Sara is already the Guild Director. Deacon is one yummy man; I can't blame Sara for fighting so hard to keep him. I commend the author for leaving their relationship as a "promise" for the future, and no L words were spoken, because it would have been a stretch otherwise.
Angels' Wolf is the story of Noel (a vampire) and Nimra (a ruling angel). Noel was sent to Nimra both to protect her and to discover who the assassin could be. Nimra had narrowly escaped death when her cat took the poison that was meant for her. Their romance was a slow, unfurling bud, and it was sweet to witness. I like how the author rode the fine balance of Noel asserting his maleness without overstepping Nimra's angelic authority, as she is technically his boss. And I like that Noel is man enough to accept a woman's superiority without feeling inadequate. (All too few men are like that in the real world.) That said, the revelation of the suspense part took me by surprise, and while it's somewhat believable, it's a bit...sad and I'm of the opinion the other party (the "villain") is a bit unhinged to even think of doing such a thing.
Finally, Angels' Dance, the novella for which I picked up this book, having read of Jessamy, the angel with the damaged wing, in a previous book. I was curious, of course, to see how Galen won her over, and their romance was long (takes over a period of time) and sweet and went through a lot of trials and tests. I like the letters the best, and the glimpses the story gives us of major characters in the series like Illium, Jason, Aodhan, and Raphael, long before the events in Angels' Blood (book 1 of the series). In Angels' Dance, Raphael had been ruling as archangel for only about 100 years, and he's still consolidating his powers and building up his army. It's a great glimpse into the beginning of Raphael's reign, and how he selected people he could trust to be his Seven.
If you've been reading the Guild Hunters Series and love it, you surely don't want to miss this! If you're new to the series, you can definitely read ANGELS' FLIGHT before the other books. Except for Angels' Wolf, the events happening in the novellas take place before Angels' Blood.
