I absolutely loved this book! J.C. Wardon has hit another home run with TOUCH OF LIGHTNING, the second book in the Mystic Waters series. Just like the first one, this book had it all. There was romance, passion and some steamy love scenes. It had a mystery, suspense and a bit of paranormal. I don't mind saying that I loved every page.
The Cavanaugh sisters descend from an ancient line of powerful witches. Yet for the most part their awesome mystical gifts have yet to bring them true love. One by one they are being drawn to the West Virginia town of Mystic Waters where a much bigger mystery is being played out. In this book, it is Haven who finds love with Logan, who get their chance at love.
I loved the characters in this one. Logan was hot and I felt that he was a more interesting leading man. The author gave him some emotional drama that made it easy for me to connect with his character. It was pretty much the same way with Haven, though I felt that she was a bit hard on Logan. She had lost her healing ability and simply did not know what to do with herself. So she comes to town and right away the sparks flew for her and Logan. Yes, the pun is intended, but you'll have to read the book to find out what I'm meant.
The characters were all awesome because J.C. Wardon gave great depth to them. There's nothing generic about them at all. Not only were the descriptions very vivid, more importantly this author delved very carefully into their psyche. She gave the reader clear view into their feelings of fear and passion, their anger and frustrations. Not just the leading characters but the secondary ones as well. She also gave the reader an intriguing view into the twisted mind of a serial killer.
I am intently interested in what will happen with Gavin, the missing boy. I liked how the author shows me what he is feeling too. His desperation to live, the resignation of what could happen to him, his clever cunning as he plays the game with a killer, his immense pain as he remembers his family. That was the hardest part for me to read. I read those parts with tears in my eyes.
This book was extremely well written. It is emotionally dramatic and intense. It had a lot of meat to it, with a plot that was absolutely riveting. The characters were likeable and interesting. The romance itself was sweet, but amazingly enough that wasn't my favorite part. It was the common arc that spans the series and the suspense of everything that's going on within that storyline. I liked that the author gave it more than one villain, as the pieces of the puzzle continue to intrigue this reader. The story flowed easily and the continuity was excellent as one book seamlessly merges into the next one.
TOUCH OF LIGHTNING is a riveting psychological thriller that pulled me in and kept me on the edge. It made me wonder what would happen next and already has me looking forward to the third book and what I believe will surely be a stunning culmination of the bigger arc that spans this series. I highly recommend this book, and the series, to everyone.
