Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with a brand new funny, romantic, sexy story!
A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.
When you're a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it's necessary when I'm breaking down a witness on the stand.
Complications don't work for me—I'm a "need-to-know" type of man. If you're my client, tell me the basic facts. If you're my date, stick to what will turn you on. I'm not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don't pretend to be.
Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.
Chelsea's too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she's not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.
And that—that, I know how to do.

SUSTAINED is a different kind of love story, one you won't expect but can't ignore.
Jake Becker is at the top of his game. As one of the premier defense attorneys in Washington DC, Jake is making a name for himself and doesn't mind being an unapologetic asshole if the situation warrants it. A wake up call in the sex department has Jake rethinking his stance on one night stands (he's for them) and contemplating venturing into the dating pool (just the word gives him hives). After a thieving little pickpocket snatches his wallet and he hauls the kid off to his parents, Jake is stunned into silence when he lays eyes on Chelsea McQuaid.
One minute Chelsea's got a fun, carefree life in California, the next she's got custody of her deceased brother and sister-in-law's 6 children and is living in DC. When she meets Jake, she can't believe how sweet and helpful this big inked-up giant is. The two fall head over heels for each other, but with Jake's past an ever-present reminder of his bad boy ways, he knows he can't saddle this woman with his baggage when she's got plenty of her own. Too bad he's just as in love with the kids as he is with their aunt.
SUSTAINED is the second book in the Legal Briefs Series
by the talented Ms. Chase, and while it can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend picking up the first book, OVERRULED, first. Jake is this former bad boy with an inked-up, buffed up bod that oozes a "don't fuck with me" vibe in the courtroom and an "I wanna fuck you" vibe in the bedroom. He doesn't do relationships and couldn't give a shit about the woman's feelings the morning after. Till he meets Chelsea. I swear, my ovaries did a little happy dance at the thought of this big sexy dude taking on 6 kids without so much as a hot make out sesh with their aunt first! Jake doesn't do women with baggage, and that's something that Chelsea has oodles of, all ranging from 6 months to 14 years. Chelsea, bless her heart, has dealt with the death of her brother and sister-in-law and has taken on insta-motherhood, but she never once complains or laments her situation. Instead she embraces the challenge and is determined to give these kids a stable and healthy home.
So, the chemistry is great between Jake and Chelsea...it's more of a slow-burning and sensual type of chemistry instead of the headboard banging, tied to the coat-rack kind (not to say that the sex scenes aren't deliciously erotic, 'cause WHEW they are). BUT...the real love story here is between Jake and the kids. I know, it could totally be weird, right? This random guy starts taking responsibility for 6 kids and he barely knows the whole situation...but it's not. It FEELS right. Genuine, heartfelt, loving, funny and pretty damn perfect. Ms. Chase's unique writing style (told entirely from Jake's POV) elicits so many different emotions, but humor and love are two that stick out in SUSTAINED. This line from Jake combines both effortlessly:
"And the kids are a fucking riot. Like a funny, sometimes adorable, sometimes ass-pain-causing fungus, they've grown on me."
Jake becomes this strangely solid figure in their lives, and the love that he has for them and vice versa is truly organic and beautiful. I wholeheartedly recommend SUSTAINED for fans of legal romances, erotic romances or just plain ole' feel-good books (with a side of sex).
Bottom Line: This is one of the few series that I'll be recommending to all of my friends. The writing is the perfect blend of smart and sexy, the characters are relatable and this book is just plain FANTASTIC.

5 "Family Man" Stars! Fans of romantic comedies will not want to miss SUSTAINED! I have always been a fan of Ms. Chase's work (who isn't a Drew Evans fan?), but I have to say, I fell in love all over again with Ms. Chase's writing in SUSTAINED! As a mother of three and a lawyer to boot, I can totally relate to the wild escapades that Jake and Chelsea had to navigate on their journey to love. It's like starting with the mini-van and white picket fence before the first date, but totally hilarious and yet strangely familiar and endearing all the same.
Jake Becker is on his way to criminal defense lawyer super stardom. Soon he will make the holy grail of every big law associate's dreams: partner. The fact that he has no ball and chain or kids to distract him makes it all the more easier . . . a set of circumstances he plans to continue for the rest of his life while enjoying everything that a lucrative career can offer.
When he meets a boy who tries to pick his pocket, however, he can't help but see himself in his eyes. He too was once a lost youth, and had it not been for his mentor, a judge, he would likely not be where he is today. So he takes pity on the youth and does the right thing by returning him to his home, rather than turning him in to the authorities. To his vast surprise, however, the boy is only one of six orphaned kids living in a large brood, now being taken care of by a very young and attractive aunt named Chelsea McQuaid.
A few unfortunate events later for the McQuaid clan, and Jake is firmly entrenched in the front lines of this family's matters. While he is enjoying helping out, he and Chelsea can't help but feel the undeniable attraction. But can Jake afford to take his usual fast and loose approach with Chelsea, when there is so much more riding on the line? Notwithstanding what he feels, could his bottom line focused career approach ever be flexible enough to accommodate more?
What a fantastic story! From the main characters to the children who play such a central role in bringing the hero and heroine together, you won't be able to help but root for them all to find their HEA!
Ms. Chase's writing just keeps getting better and better. Now I can't wait for Brent's story in Appealed (Legal Briefs #3) due out this November!
