Forbidden love. Untouchable…
King Noeh wants to live his single life, fight his enemy, and honor his goddess by winning the war over Earth's most precious resource—water. Bonding to a female shifter is not part of the plan, not until his goddess insists he take a queen by the next full moon or lose his crown. When he rescues a beautiful female from the enemy's grasp, a forbidden attraction blooms, and he must decide between his kingdom and his heart.
Melissa hunts for a new place she can call home, one far away from her controlling master who vowed to make her his concubine. Captured by the enemy and tortured to near death, she's rescued by a brooding, handsome king. When her master shows up at the king's underground Keep, the tension escalates. She struggles to keep the honorable king at arm's length, but she can't ignore the compelling desire he ignites in her soul.

Someone has plans for Earth. There is a secret battle for its resources. Humans don't realize there are others on the planet that are fighting the battle for their future. If the wrong group wins, the people of Earth will become slaves. One man has been leading the battle to save the Earth from enslavement. The losses and sacrifices have left him embittered but a young woman may be his salvation.
The Earth is threatened by the plans of another planet that wants its resources. They need water desperately. One leader wants to work with the Earth and treat it as a partner but the other wants to take its resources and make humans their slaves. An elaborate game is in place to determine who is the victor. There are Lemurians that are shape-shifters with magical abilities that are on the side of good while the Gossum are on the side of evil. They have battled for hundreds of years and the Lemurians have been reduced dramatically in number due to an illness that not only killed many but also left the women unable to have children. The Gossum are able to convert humans to join their cause so their numbers remain strong.
King Noeh is a Lemurian who is very strong warrior. They used to have the ability to shift into a large creatures but have not been able to shift in a long time due to issues with returning to the regular form. Noeh has lost so many during the battles, including his parents, and had to take over as leader at a young age. The pain of losing so many has made him reluctant to select a mate as his queen. He is rapidly losing his compassion and empathy and only continues on due to his devotion to others. When he is asked to unite all the Lemurians at the Keep that he operates to protect his people, he is also required to take a queen.
Melissa is a different kind of Lemurian who is a combination of a shifter, a vampire and a mage. She was bitten several years by a panther shifter and can not shift into an animal but has enhanced senses and a special magical ability. She also needs to take blood from a member of the opposite sex on a regular basis to maintain her powers. She is a rare female that can have a child but lost her mate and child during an attack. Because she was bitten, she is considered a slave and is trying to escape from the leader of the group that wants her to be his concubine. Melissa wants to be free to make her own choices and not be desired strictly for her ability to have children. In her desire to escape one prison, she ends up in a very dangerous situation and is rescued by Noeh and his team of warriors. The chemistry between the two is strong but Noeh needs a queen and she is being required to find a mate as well.
The author balances the mythology and romance well which is a difficult challenge. The mythology is interwoven into the story and into the relationship as it impacts their ability to be together. There is a lot of story to tell and it is very well paced. The relationship between Noeh and Melissa is not rushed and the attraction builds as they work together to save others. It is important to get the history of the characters so we can understand their actions and the foundation is very well prepared by the author. We also get both characters narrating parts of the story which makes it easier to forge a connection to them. The characters are a strong point of the story and there are a number of supporting characters that become important elements of the storyline, and the author allows one of them to narrate as well. Sometimes several narrators can be confusing. In this case, the transitions were handled very smoothly. There are strong villains to root against as they threaten those we care about.
The author does an excellent job of creating this world and its characters and getting the reader invested in the premise. There is an interesting mix of characters that will appeal to those who enjoy stories featuring shifters, vampires and mages. Noeh and Melissa earn the loyalty of the reader from the beginning based on their tragic pasts and their strength of character in the face of much pain. Their relationship balances them and gives them the strength to continue the fight for the people of Earth. It is a very strong start to what I hope will be a series.
