- Book 1 of The Kings of The Fire
Felicity Valdez just wants a simple life. She's turned her back on her family legacy and escaped to a tiny Pennsylvania town. She's even changed her name to cut all ties between herself and the powerful Valdez family, who rules the magical world. All she wants is to run her shop, a place where she can brew up potions and a damn fine cup of coffee. And maybe flirt with the gorgeous guy who keeps coming in to see her. But there's more to Damien than meets the eye, and Felicity is soon caught up in intrigue that could shatter her simple life forever. Damien Dragomir has been on the run for decades. As the last dragon rulers of the magical world, he has sheltered his brothers from the Valdez family, usurpers who murdered his parents and would do the same to him if they could find him. Damien's drive in life has been the safety of his family, but that was before he met Felicity. He can't stop thinking about the beautiful witch who makes the killer coffee. Is the fire he feels for Felicity enough to trump his hatred of the Valdez name? Love is supposed to conquer all, but can it overcome their history?

Wealth and power can bring great danger. She wants a simpler life away from the power and corruption being part of her magical family brings. He needs to keep a promise to protect his brothers from the magical community. Their meeting sets powerful things into motion. Can they stand the heat and enjoy the fire?
Felicity has distanced herself from the family that seized control of the magical community in a bitter battle decades ago. She loves her little shop in the town she now calls home. The only thing really missing is a romance. She never seems to attract attention unless they are after her family fortune and name. It has left her insecure and a little unsure even when one of her customers is clearly interested.
Damien has been living a quiet life under the radar trying to hide him and his brothers form the powerful family that killed his parents to assume the throne. He hides in his barren apartment much of the time. When he enters a shop and sees a woman being mistreated by a customer, his protective side rears up. The woman enchants him and he wants to see more of her.
The author does a great job of relaying stories from their pasts that really shaped the characters. You get an intimate look at Damien's last moments with his mom. Felicity remembers the clubs where men ignored her and the critical things her mom told her that influenced her less-than-positive feelings about her body and impact her relationship with men. I felt like I developed a good understanding of the characters through these stories.
Everything moves so fast in the story. The attraction between Felicity and Damien overwhelms them very quickly. They really don't get a chance to build a relationship. I would have liked to see them have a few dates and some conversations to really build the bond that we are told they have so soon. Considering the animosity their families have for one another, a slower buildup of the relationship would have led to more impact when their family history is revealed and jeopardized the trust they had built.
Felicity and Damien are used to putting the needs of others ahead of their own and now have the chance to seek their own happiness. Her father took control over the magical community and forced the remaining dragon shifters to live in hiding. When the oldest children of the next generation fall in love, they will have to find a way to overcome that tragedy to build a new future.
The author does an excellent job developing the characters. I wish there was as much time devoted to developing the relationship. It moves so fast and a longer build up would have brought more impact to the later storyline developments. I think there are some real opportunities for other storylines. I would like to read more stories featuring their siblings getting their chance at love.
