I have always been a bird. Caged by one prison or another when the only thing I ever wanted was to fly away.
Sold. Beaten. Starved. Drugged.
Nothing scares me anymore.
Until him.
He makes the numbness go away.
He is hazardous to me. It has nothing to do with his mafia lifestyle, and everything to do with what he offers.
A gilded prison.
A retreat from everything that I once knew. The reality I have no desire to return to.
He thinks he's caged me, but soon…
I'm going to fly.

I live by a code. The Vory code.
In this mafiya world, there are traditions.
She does not care for these things. She does not care about anything.
She thinks she has me fooled with her haunted eyes.
What she can't know is that I see her better than most.
She wants to fly.
But I'm going to clip her wings.
And make her my wife.

Warning: this book contains multiple instances of rape, sexual assault and abuse.

Kidnapped, raped and sold to monsters as a sex slave, Talia can only hope to die. To fly away. To never feel the constant hell and pain and abuse again. Russian Vor Alexei Nikolaev made a promise to find Talia, and has pulled out all the stops to remove her from the home of her captor at the risk of his own head. Alexei needs Talia, he will make her his wife to help his position in the organization. And whatever he does, he will clip her wings. He will ground her. He will put her in a gilded cage. And she will enjoy it.

Woah, the first few chapters of GHOST were seriously tough to read. The knowledge that the sex trafficking trade is such a prevalent worldwide issue is nausea-inducing. My heart absolutely broke for what Talia went through, reducing a once vibrant young woman into a gaunt, addict shell of her former self. Alexei was not your typical romance hero. He's a top dog in a major Russian mafia organization and has no qualms about torturing and killing those who betray him. A. Zavarelli has a way of making these characters just jump off the page to grab you by the heart and squeeze. You can't help but feel like Talia and Alexi are a couple damaged by the effects of hard lives, but who find kindred spirits in each other, quieting the demons when they're together. The sex is incredible...sometimes a little kinky, sometimes sweet, sometimes violent, but when it's between Talia and Alexi, it's just so so good.

Bottom Line: Honestly, this book will not be for everyone. It's raw, gritty, abusive and a little psycho, but the story behind these two MC's will grab your heart and refuse to let go. There may be tears, a dropped jaw, eyes squeezed shut, but there will also be hope and redemption. One of the best series of the year.
