Paranormal Romance

It only takes one drink from the Water of Immortality to kill Evie Woods—halfway. Trapped in undead flesh, the world's last skin-slider wakens on an island purgatory where a cursed spring bubbles with immortality, and zombie cannibals crave living flesh. Her only hope of escape rests in the hands of the one man who would see her fail. Lord Victor Lowell, the man of her dreams and darkest nightmares. Contrary and intractable, Victor preys on others to maintain his angelic charisma and preternatural prowess.

Trapped in an ever escalating war they can't stop, Victor and Evie fight time for a cure, but as the long days pass, blackness tears at Evie, ripping her thoughts from her one memory at a time. Victor will do whatever it takes to prevent her from deteriorating into a rotting husk, even if it means dooming himself, but Evie won't surrender his soul without a fight.

"He'd given the last spark of his life and as long as it stayed within her she wouldn't be truly dead. Yet she wasn't alive either. She was somewhere between the two conditions."

The last of the skin-sliders, Evie Woods finds herself on an island purgatory with a seeming tether to one Lord Victor Lowell. Trapped somewhere between life and death, Evie must survive the man of her dreams and nightmares, zombie cannibals, some incredibly vicious future in-laws, and The Maiden. Together, Evie and Victor search for the cure that will save them all but it seems as though everyone and everything is fighting to stop them.

I do love a good period piece. Add in some preternatural suspense AND zombies, and I'm sold. Given everything that's happening, Evie has incredible strength of character (far better than anyone else) and still manages to maintain the strength to know what's right and wrong, despite the whisperings in her head to the contrary. Victor is quite the debonair character, even as he quickly fell to the power of The Maiden, but love prevails even under the worst of circumstances.

Ms. Celeste creates a tightly woven story that doesn't fluctuate in pace or suspense with each morsel of story doled out to readers so as to keep us enthralled. And she did that spectacularly well, as we are kept in the dark along with Evie. The gradual development of the relationship between Evie and Victor is rocky to say the least, rife with the unknown and leaving readers to wonder if love will eventually win or if all will be for naught.

She ripped her cooling flesh from his spectral arms. "I don't deserve kindness."
"Good." He gave her a rakish smirk. "Because I'm not kind."
