BENEATH THE SURFACE starts with a boat explosion and doesn't end there. This story has suspense from beginning to end but it also has sweet, heartfelt passion between the two main characters who found love during a tragic search for his cousin and her search of the person that is trying to kill her and her two friends.
Brooke Richards is a woman that lost everything when her parents died in Egypt in an earthquake. She felt at fault for her parents dying and she stopped doing what she loved, especially after she lost her leg in that earthquake. Her belief was that she should not rely on anyone but herself, but when she had lost her leg, her boyfriend did everything for her and at the end, he left her, too. So when she finds herself in danger and there is one cop that makes her feel safe and warm inside, she wants to lean on him and not think of anything but his protectiveness.
Garrett Ciavello is a cop and has been on the hunt for his missing cousin for the past two months. He believes that her boyfriend killed her and he can't wait to find him and find out what he did to her. When he meets Brooke, there is something about her that has his body intrigued on how she would feel pressed against him and her lips everywhere. Then he has the sense to protect her but he realizes that she is an independent woman who won't stand having someone hover over her. So when he receives a distressed phone call one night telling him that she needed to stay with him, he was in heaven. But all good things come to an end.
BENEATH THE SURFACE is an intense story of love, action and mystery that really makes an impact. Brooke and her friends were out on a mission to try to find a steel box at the bottom of the ocean that seemed to call to them. Garrett is out to find this steel box because there is something also calling to him but someone is making it very difficult for them to find out. This man will stop at nothing in order to keep them from having that box surface. He tries his best to kill Brooke one night, he tried to kill her best friends but they just won't die. They were getting closer to finding the box but he truly believed he was smarter than them and he would find a way to stop them even if it meant he would do want he loved the most--act and become someone else.
Brooke and Garrett are a wonderful couple and I had the best time reading how their relationship developed and how they truly deserved each other. They both had the pain of feeling of having let down the people they loved. There is a solid emotional connection between the two that you just get lost in the story. I had a difficult time trying to guess who the villain was and I believe that is why I could not put the book down. I wanted to know who it was and why he was doing it. I loved the dialogue and was enthralled with all of emotions, the suspense, just everything about the book.
Jory Fields is a new author to me, and I can say after reading this story that I will be on the look out for other works by her. This was a great mystery/suspense story and a great happily ever after. Pick up a copy today of BENEATH THE SURFACE; you will not regret it.
