A great romance novel, or any kind of story for that matter, does its job when you are deeply invested in the characters. You don’t just want to know how the story ends; you are curious about how the individual stories of each person will turn out. Over the course of reading a novel, the characters in the story become real to you. They become a part of your life. Coworkers, family members, and friends become the real-life avatar of the people you read about.

The story jumps off the page, and you live it while you read it. You develop emotional connections to the characters and get angry with them when they make a mistake or miss an opportunity. And when they find love, it’s like you found it too. Or when they miss out on love, it’s like you missed out as well. That is what it feels like to read a truly great romance novel. It connects with readers in a way, unlike other genres can.

Good authors know how to connect emotionally

The people who read romance are sensitive souls who want the freedom to experience the rollercoaster of romance any time they want through the pages of a book. The authors who write these stories are the same way. They are emotional people who love exploring what makes us tick. Romance authors have great emotional intelligence and empathy, which makes them great at telling stories that touch our hearts.

They are experts at taking that spicy daydream and creating a rich world for it to exist in. Others write a classical romance based on past times when the way of life was totally different from now. They open a window into the thoughts and emotions of common people in love. Contemporary romance authors explore the journeys modern people take to find their true love. They show how the changing world affects who we love and how we show it.

Where does a story come from?

All romance novels come from a person who loves romance as much as you do. But where does the inspiration come from? Do they get classic stories by listening to their grandparents explain how they fell in love? Do they take stories from their own life? Is writing a romance novel a way to release their own repressed feelings? As readers, we want to know where a story really comes from. Our favorite moment in a book might have been inspired by an unlikely event in the author’s life that can give the story new meaning for us.

Talking with romance authors will also give us the inside scoop on upcoming projects. We can also learn tips and tricks for writing our own love stories.

Where to listen to our conversations

Our monthly chats with romance authors happen via videoconference. If an author happens to be in our neck of the woods, the interview is done in person with the rest of us tuning in online. We drop the link to join the videoconference exactly one hour before the interview starts. You can join early and chat with fellow love story nerds and submit questions for the featured author. We can’t promise your question will get asked, but we always appreciate your contributions.

As part of our prize for fanfiction piece of the month, the winning writer will get to join the interview to ask one question or share a thought with the featured author. This is a great opportunity to talk directly to an acclaimed romance novelist and pick their brain. Or tell them how much you love them. Either way, our monthly chats are something you don’t want to miss. But if you do miss it, the entire interview transcript will be posted on TheRomanceReviews.com the next day.

Keep track of your favorite writers

If you read a great romance novel and want us to interview that author specifically, request it on our weekly conversation threads. If enough people want to talk to the same author, we will make it a priority to get them online with us. If your favorite author is no longer living, we can’t help you there.

Here are some upcoming interviews for contemporary romance novelists you’ll want to mark your calendar for:

  • Ali Hazelwood
  • Tessa Bailey
  • Erin Sterling
  • Colleen Hoover
  • Tia Williams
  • Sally Thorne
  • Tillie Cole

If reading that list of authors got you excited, you will definitely want to catch their interview live. You could have the chance to hear them answer your question or speak to them directly. Don’t miss the chance to hear what inspires them to tell the stories we love reading. If you haven’t already, get more familiar with those authors’ books.
